I recently collaborated with illustrator Derek Yaniger (derekart.com) on a very cool paperscene (see this post). Derek just made this paperscene even better by creating a fitting background for it. Now I really want to live in this place. Awesome!

EGGBIRD (LIMITED FREE DOWNLOAD) - I’m still playing around with curved surfaces and ways to make it easy to fold them. This model is the result of a few folding tests and consists of a simple one sheet model you can put together in about half an hour. For a LIMITED time you can DOWNLOAD the model, including a blank version for customizing. So be quick before it’s gone.

Something a bit different. For my commercial paper projects we needed a box to transport my papertoys to meetings and possible clients. So I created a handmade custom cardboard box that can store/display my toys, flat templates and other material.

HI-FI GUY - This project is a collaboration with the very tallented illustrator Derek Yaniger (www.derekart.com), where we combined his illustration skills with my paper engineering skills to create this huge paper scene. Derek provided me with an initial sketch, from which I created a blank paper template, which he in turn illustrated in his typical tiki-style. The end result is this awesome poster-sized template that you can either hang on the wall or cut to pieces to create the paper scene. We hope to make this template available for purchase soon.

I already posted a related video last week, but now Papertoys.nl is officially online. As I stated before we now offer papertoy design at the company I work for, and we created a website especially for that. We are aiming for the Dutch market initially, but we very much welcome international clients as well.

FUNNY FRIES - On my last model I used a tube of toothpaste as inspiration. This time I’m planning to use the folding technique you find in those little cardboard containers they use for fries for a new model I have in the pipeline. TARGETBOY is the result of some experimenting with curves, circles and colored paper. He was reverse-engineered from a model created by just folding, glueing and cutting pieces of paper together until I had a model that worked and then transferred all the pieces to Illustrator. The result I printed on colored paper and rebuild again as a one-off model.

SURPRISE - I grew up on a steady diet of caramel spread, licorice allsorts and Kinder Surprise, those chocolate eggs with a yellow capsule inside that contained a gift. Visits to my grandmother were usually rewarded with one those milky eggs with a surprise inside. This is my tribute to the many many surprise eggs I consumed and the tiny toys inside that I built. By the way, I did a little research on them and found out they are illegal in the US. So I guess this model is for non-US residents only :)

STAR WARS FANBOY - I’m a huge Star Wars fan (and avid supporter of the original trilogy without all the ‘special edition’ tinkering). So why did it take so long for me to do a paper model inspired by the Star Wars universum. Well, probably because it has already been done to death and I felt I could not contribute anything fresh to huge amount of fan art already out there. So instead of doing my interpretation of a Star Wars character I chose do to my interpretation of a Star Wars fan boy going to the premiere of Star Wars 3D (that’s why he wears those glasses). This one obviously couldn’t chose between Han, Leia and Chewie so incorporated elements of all three characters in his costume. The model itself was sort of an experiment for me, being the first model I created from colored paper instead of printing out an illustrator template. The model was created as my entry for the Planet Pulp Star Wars themed show.

INDIANA JONES - One of the first films for ‘grown-ups’ that I saw when I was young was Raiders of the Lost Ark and it made a huge impression on me. The ‘melting face’ scene got stuck in my head for a couple of weeks after viewing. This movie wasn’t like anything I had seen before. So it was a joy to find out Planet Pulp was doing an Indiana Jones theme for their February 2012 show and I could pay tribute to one of the films that turned me into a movie geek.

BRIGHT RED 1 & 2 - This is my tribute to two bright plastic toys I was totally fascinated by when I was a kid, the Viewmaster and the Etch-a-Sketch. I remember peeking into an empty viewmaster trying to see the inner workings and spending a whole afternoon scratching the window of the Etch-a-Sketch completely clean. Instead of creating exact paper replica’s I chose to do very simple interpretations that fit on a single page and are very easy to construct.

MORK AND MORK - My entry for the Planet Pulp Ha-Ha-Sitcom show. Especially for this show I revived my old Foldskool Heroes template, because it was perfect for the models I wanted to do. The template consists of two variations of Mork from Ork, one in his normal clothes and one in his uniform.
